FLORENCE, AL – Three robotics teams from Kilby Laboratory School on the University of North Alabama campus have earned bids to compete in the VEX Robotics World Championship competition in Dallas, Texas, from May 2-5.

“As the Director of Kilby, I am so proud to watch the growth of our robotics programs over the last few years,” said Dr. Eric Kirkman. “We started off with about 12-15 students, and now we have close to 50.”

Simply making it to the statewide competition was the original goal, Dr. Kirkman said. That event took place in Auburn in February. Eight teams from Kilby competed at the State VEX IQ Robotics Competition. Of the 73 teams there, two of the Kilby 6th grade teams earned qualifying scores in skills and team driving, while the third-grade team received a bid to compete in Dallas thanks to their robot design.

“It blows me away that we made it to state with four teams, and three of those teams have qualified for the world competition,” Dr. Kirkman said. “It is satisfying to see the level of success that has come as a result of the hard work these students and their coaches have put in. Our parent support has also been phenomenal, and it really helped put our kids where they deserve to be as winners and qualifiers in the world competition.”

Just 29 teams from the State of Alabama received a bid to compete at the VEX Robotics World Championships, and Kilby captured three of those spots.

“Kilby is a wonderful example of STEM in action,” said Dr. Katie Kinney, Dean of the College of Education and Human Sciences. “Robotics competitions like this bring together the worlds of science, technology, engineering, and math and allow students to shine. Further, these are skills that can be used throughout a lifetime and set the stage for career and workforce success. It is really preparing students for their futures.”

Kilby will be having fundraisers to help offset the cost of travel and other expenses related to the competition.
